Bronte Fitzsimmons

Vancouver Island University Mariners

Women’s Soccer

September 24 - On Saturday versus the Langara Falcons, Bronte Fitzsimmons (Victoria, B.C.) setup the first goal for the Mariners when she sent Jessie Weninger in on a breakaway. She scored the Mariners’ second goal on a 30-yard blast to make it 2-0 VIU. During the game, Bronte had the Langara defenders on their heels as every time she touched the ball as she was a constant threat. In the Mariners’ second game of the weekend, Sunday versus the Capilano Blues, she again setup the first goal on a pinpoint cross which found the head of Kaylee Dodds. Bronte made it 3-1 VIU when she calmly put away a penalty shot after being fouled by the Capilano keeper on a breakaway, resulting in a red card to the Blues goalie. Over the weekend, Bronte was involved in four of the five goals scored by VIU.

Victor Blasco

Vancouver Island University Mariners

Men’s Soccer

September 24 - Victor Blasco (Spain) led the Mariners to a 2-0 victory over the Langara Falcons last Saturday. Blasco scored early to put the Mariners up 1-0 on a great individual effort, picking the ball up at center, beating two defenders, and finishing with a nice shot from the top of the eighteen yard line. Blasco continued to make runs at the Falcons defenders and this created a number of free-kick opportunities for the Mariners. It was late in the second half when Blasco helped set up the Mariners’ second goal, starting a great build up before a Mariner forward was able to get on the end of the final pass to give VIU a 2-0 victory. Sunday, Blasco again showed why he is considered one of the single biggest threats in the PacWest, helping his team to a 2-2 tie with the Capilano Blues and a five point lead in the PacWest standings. Blasco caused problems for the Capilano defenders all game. He scored the Mariners first goal, showing his talent and pace, going in alone, rounding the goalkeeper, and burying the opportunity. Not long after Blasco's first goal, he broke through once again, but was fouled in the penalty box. Blasco made no mistake from the spot and gave the Mariners a two goal lead going into the half. The Mariners finished the weekend in first place in the PacWest with five wins and two ties.
