Undefeated Men's Soccer

September 24th, 2014

This past weekend the VIU Mariners went in to Saturdays game at top spot of the Pacwest and after a win and a tie they came out still in top position by 5 points.

Saturday the Mariners played the Langara Falcons and came away with a 2-0 victory. The first goal scorer was VIU and PacWest Athlete of the week Victor Blasco, second goal by 1st year player Luke Phye. The Mariners took it to the Falcons early with striker Blaze Roberts unlucky not to net one and Blasco giving Falcon defenders fits with his pace and skill. Blasco gave the Mariners plenty of opportunities when he was continuously fouled but The Mariners were unable to capitalize on their chances. Defenders ,Captain Jeff Travis , Peter Cooper, Mateo Kostering and Aly Adeeb did a solid job of shouting down the Falcon attack . Blasco scored in the first have for the Mariners making a run past a couple defenders and putting the ball away.

The second half started 1-0 but it was Luke Phye with a hard shot from out that sealed it for VIU Mariners. Keegan Lang did a good job steering the middle of the park and helping to take the three points.

Sunday's game started much like Saurdays game with Victor Blasco making run's at the Capilano Blues backline and putting some good balls across the front of goal. Both Jamie Taylor and Rennan Robatto were getting forward to support their attacking players and it was Blasco that finished the half with 2 goals , one on a solo run into the penalty box and one on a PK when taken down by a defender from behind. The score at half time was 2-0 with things looking good going into the 2nd half.

The second half was nothing like the 1st half of the game there was not the same type of flow and the Mariners lost composure after some bad tackles on Blasco. The Mariners right back was asked to leave the field when he picked up his 2nd yellow card that put the team down a man. Capilano continued to play their game worked hard pressured and were rewarded with 2 2nd half goals ending the game at a 2-2 draw.

Bill Merriman" I am pleased the team was able to keep them selves in first place. I was disappointed we didn't get the 6 points but putting teams away when we have a lead is something we have talked about and will improve on. I know that we have two scoring threats on our team that have not broken out yet ,but When Blaze Roberts and Jordan DeGraaf start getting their confidence we will be a triple threat going into the last half of the season"
