1st place soccer teams

September 28th, 2014

The Vancouver Island University Men's Soccer team did the job on the road this past weekend.

Saturday they travelled to 3rd place Douglas College for what always is an entertaining game. The Mariners picking up a 1-0 win off a Blaze Roberts goal. Jamie Taylor made a good run done the outside beat a defender and played a good ball across the front of goal to Roberts and he made no mistake.

The rest of the game was back and forth with a couple scoring opportunities the Mariners keeper , Scott Brown was called on to make a couple good saves on balls slipped in behind the defenders but it was the Mariners. captain Jeff Travis that was a stand out in his centre back position. Midfielders Jamie Taylor and Jordan DeGraaf also had strong performances in the 1-0 win.

Sunday the Mariners travelled again to meet 2nd place Kwantlen Eagles. This time it was Jorden DeGraaf and Victor Blasco doing the damage with 1 goal each and the Mariners finished with a 2-0 win. VIU's goal keeper Scott Brown was called on in the 2nd half to make an outstanding save tipping a hard shot up over the cross bar. The very stingey backline of Mateo Kostering , Peter Cooper, Ben Robson and Mariners leader Jeff Travis all had outstanding weekend collecting to shut outs.

Mariners now 11 and 12 points up on 2nd and 3rd place teams.

Bill Merriman; " very pleased with the way the team is responding to what we talk about and work on in training. The other big one was our discipline was good this weekend , the players kept their composure"

VIU women’s soccer have already scored more goals this season than the last two seasons combined !! There are still six games to be played ….

Home games this Saturday vs Quest University … Women 1pm Men 3pm Nanaimo Turf Field

VIU 5, Douglas 0

VIU 0, Kwantlen 0

Saturday VIU playing the #4 ranked team in Canada, came out determined from the opening whistle, in the 12th minute Mariner's would get on the board, a miscue by Douglas keeper led to an open net for Bronte Fitzsimmons to make it 1-0 VIU, 10 minutes later Mariner's would make it 2-0, two freshman would hookup, Ceilidh Glennie's brilliant cross found Madeline Dawson in front of the net. It wouldn't be long before it read 3-0 on the scoreboard, Carli Rey put on a dribbling display when she took the ball at center of the pitch and beat numerous defenders to find herself at the corner of the 18, she crossed the ball in from of the net, the ball bounced off Royals defender and into the corner of the net. Kaylee Dodds would make it 4-0 VIU on a fantastic header from a Fitzsimmons corner kick, it would stay that way till halftime.

Second half started how the first ended with VIU continuing to create scoring chances, halftime sun Kim Cardwell would make it 5-0, Fitzsimmons would send Cardwell on a breakaway with a pinpoint through ball behind the Douglas defense and Cardwell would slot it into the corner of the net.

"the girls were really focused this week in training, we lost to Douglas couple of weeks back, we felt we let one get away that day, I knew we were going to come out strong, our defense is playing at a very high level right now, we didn't give anything away today, we're in first place but the girls know there is still lots of soccer  left to be played"

Sunday vs Kwantlen, VIU had couple really good chances early to take the lead, Fitzsimmons shot from corner of the 18 would sail inches over the corner of the net, Dodds would hit the cross bar minutes later, Glennie's shot from six yards out forced Eagles keeper to make a diving save, it would be 0-0 at the half.

Second half saw a different VIU team, more determined and focused, majority of it being played in Kwantlen's side of the field. VIU would hit two more crossbars, Fitzsimmons from a free kick and Jillian Kelly from top of the 18, Maddy Leigh, Glennie and Dodds would just miss the net on clear headers, Dodds again on blast from top of 18 missed the bar by inches. It would end up 0-0. With six games left to play, one more VIU win will clinch a playoff spot.

"Kwantlen did a very good job protecting their box with numbers in the first half even though we had 3-4 really good chances to score, we were a different team in the second, we really took it to them, once again we didn't give them a real good scoring chance, they had couple of long shot. Defenders Darby Conan, Sarah Meredith, Sam Rodgers and Zoe Grace played another solid game. That's four clean sheets in last five games for us, I thought Maddy Dawson played a real strong game in mid, she was excellent in defending and in attack with her pace and skill, we realize the next 4 games are against desperate teams trying to make a push for the playoffs and they will be hungry for points"
