VIU 2, Quest 0

Playing at home on Saturday for the first time in three weeks .... Mariner's would come out flat against a desperate Quest team. Neither team would create much in the opening frame that would trouble each of the two keepers. The score would be 0-0 at the half.

Mariner's would pick up the pace in the second half resulting in three goals to seal the win. Ceilidh Glennie would start things off when she out jumped everybody off a Jill Kelly corner kick, her head ball would beat the Kermode's keeper. VIU would add to the lead shortly after, Kim Cardwell went hard to the net on a through ball, forcing Quest goalie to make the initial save but the rebound went off Cardwell and past the goalie, resulting in the best goal celebration of the year (see below). Jill Kelly would again setup another goal off a corner kick, her cross would find the head of Kaylee Dodds, the header would hit Quest defender and past the goalie for 3-0 VIU lead. The win Saturday clinched one of four coveted spots at the Provincial Finals for VIU with five games to go.

"coming in we knew Quest sitting in 5th place would be desperate for points, we've been really good lately playing 90 minutes but this game for some reason we were flat, the key today was our subs, they provided that spark in the second half, Jill Kelly, Kim Cardwell, Ceilidh Glennie and Moira Brown played real strong games for us and Kaylee Dodds is starting to get healthy, she's a real nice player but has been limited this year"

Sunday in an away game against the same Kermode's squad, one could call it the Freshman Day. First year players Ceilidh Glennie with her second winning goal of the weekend and Maddy Dawson would provide the scoring. Glennie's goal was in the 2nd minute of play on a laser beam strike from 25 yards out, Dawson's goal was in the 65th minute off a Sam Rodgers free kick that found the foot of Dawson to tap it. Two other freshman players would play a prominent role in the victory, Maddy Leigh would create havoc for the Quest defense with her tireless pressure and was unlucky not to get a goal or two, Darby Cronan was once again solid at right back. The final chance of the match would land on the foot of Jill Kelly, on a breakaway her shot forced Quest keeper to make a brilliant save.  The win kept VIU 3 point ahead of Douglas College and 7 points ahead of Langara.

"I was really happy with our young players. All four first years from Nanaimo played excellent today, we're playing a nice balanced offensive and defensive game right now. Teams are keying on Bronte but our other players are stepping up and contributing in a big way, that back line of Darby, Sam, Sarah, Carli and Shelby was superb. Quest probably had 2 real good scoring chances in the two games, Carli Rey stepped in from mid to back line for injured defender Zoe Grace and was a natural back there. I thought Mo Brown was excellent filling in for injured Sharin Kang in the middle of the pitch, Zoe should be back next weekend and Sharin we'll rest for another week, one thing with this team is that we don't get too high or too low, as soon as this game ended our focus turned to Langara, we've got a real neat mix of girls, nice to be in first place but we know other teams are playing well, three of the final four games are against teams sitting in a playoff spot, and the other vs Cap is always a tough match at their narrow field"
