GAME SUMMARY

Saturday

Douglas 2, VIU 1

Sunday

VIU 1, Kwantlen 0

Saturday vs Douglas, Freshman Maddy Dawson put Mariner's on the board first in the 15th minute. A Ceilidh Glennie cross found Dawson in front for a tap in, it would be Dawson 3rd of the year. VIU had an opportunity to add to the lead from a corner kick, there was big scramble and three real good chances for Mariner players to put the ball into the net but were denied by defenders and the keeper. Douglas would tie it up midway through the first half on a long shot that found the top corner of the net. Halftime score 1-1

Second half would be back and forth with both teams not creating much until Douglas in the 70th would take the lead on a nice shot from top of the 18. VIU would put pressure on the Royals in the final 20 minutes, the best chance fell to Bronte Fitzsimmons, her free kick was saved brilliantly by Royals goalie. VIU needed a win or tie to clinch regular season title, Douglas now sits 3 points behind with one game to go for each team.

Sunday vs Kwantlen, VIU started the match strong by taking the game to the Eagles, Fitzsimmons, Sharin Kang, Jessie Weninger and Ceilidh Glennie had the best chances but the game would stay scoreless, it would stay that way until the 75th minute when a brilliant cross by Glennie found a wide open Katie Rodgers at top of 18, facing one on one with the keeper, Rodgers would tuck the ball  under the keeper to give VIU the lead it would not relinquish. The win would clinch league title and Number One seed at Pacwest Conference Provincial Finals. 7pm Friday October 24, Mariners will face the same Kwantlen Eagles (4th place) in one semi final, Langara and Douglas will play in other semi final both matches at Quest University in Squamish.

"Our goal coming into the weekend was to clinch the regular season title, we are thrilled we were able to accomplish that, this league is so tough to win with so many good teams from top to bottom, once again we showed great character on Sunday, the girls weren't going to let another opportunity up away, I thought our veteran group played well, Sharin, Kaylee Dodds, Jessie Weninger and Sam Rodgers led by example and how about our young players, they have been fantastic all year and proved it again this weekend, Darby Cronan has been a rock on the back line, Maddy Dawson scored one of our goals and Ceilidh setup both, Shelby was again superb in goal" " Kwantlen is very disciplined defensively and make it tough on you, it will be a tough match next Friday and we will need to bring our A game to get a result"
