#2 Douglas College Royals (1) def #1 Vancouver Island University Mariners (1)

SQUAMISH - The final match of the championship featured the top seeds on the men's side the #1 Vancouver Island University Mariners and the #2 Douglas College Royals. The game featured the top teams from the regular season both of whom come into the game following draining extra time semi-final matches. The challenges for both teams was to find their reserve energy after the previous day's grueling extra time matches. The first half was controlled by the Royals as they kept VIU's Scott Brown busy in net. After a clear penalty in the box, Douglas's Nicolas Pineda Graham put the Royals up with a successful penalty to make it 1-0 Douglas going into the half.

As VIU sensed their shot at the title slipping away, they regrouped and put the pressure back on Douglas and their keeper Marc Mincieli. The Mariners finally got the break they needed when Douglas's Mincieli took down VIU's Renan Rebelatto in the box. PACWEST Player of the Year Victor Blasco converted the PK to give VIU the goal needed to send the match to extra time.

The first extra time period had few quality scoring opportunities as most of the time was spent in the midfield. The few shots on goal were easily managed by the keepers. As the shadows lengthened across the field and the second extra time period wore on, the toll of nearly 240 minutes of soccer in the past 30 hours could be seen in the slower steps, late tackles and missed passes. A last flurry of activity before the final whistle saw some impressive saves but nothing could prevent this match from going into penalty kicks. Unfortunately for the top seeded Mariners, the magic of the shoot out could not repeated as the Royals beat the Mariners 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Players of the Game:

Jeff Travis (VIU)
Spencer Deboice (Douglas College)

Congratulations to JEFF TRAVIS named tournaments best defender and RENAN REBELATTO as best midfielder !!
