VIU takes the PACWEST Provincial Women's Soccer Championships

SQUAMISH - The 2014 PACWEST Provincial Women's Soccer Gold Medal game between the Vancouver Island University Mariners and the Langara College Falcons concluded a damp and foggy day at the Quest Soccer Fields. With water starting to pool in places on the pitch each tackle produced sprays of water that reminded the players and spectators of the challenging conditions of the match. The Gold Medal match become a test of the teams' ability to not only struggle with their opponents but to battle the deteriorating weather conditions. Each team was required to adjust to the slower pace and different bounces of the ball on the waterlogged field. VIU adjusted to the environment and took advantage of a costly Langara mistake, a hand ball in the box. From the spot, VIU's Player of the Game Samantha Rodgers calmly slotted the kick into the net to give VIU all the goals they would need to secure the PACWEST championship and give their fans that traveled from Nanaimo something to cheer on their way home. While a Silver Medal is not what Langara was hoping to take away from the match, their season will continue another two weeks as they, too, will represent the PACWEST at the CCAA National Championship in Alberta.
