Volleyball goes 3 for 4 vs UFV

January 25th, 2015

After a difficult five set loss on Friday our women's volleyball team bounced back to win on Saturday. In the men's game it was a battle, a slow start on Friday saw the M's trail by 2 sets  before they found their groove to go on and win 3-2. Saturday the mariners dropped the first game but rallied back to win 3-1.

Men's player of the weekend JESSE BAZERGUI
Jesse Bazergui, The Mariner’s 4th Year Left Side had a huge weekend on the road at UFV, against the Cascades. The Mariner’s left side attacker put together 2 outstanding matches over the weekend and was a big reason for the Mariners success. He was very consistent on both sides of the ball with a remarkable 55 total offensive points over the weekend.
On Friday night’s match, Jesse put together a one of the strongest matches this season in the PACWEST with 23 kills, 9 digs, 5 service aces and 3 stuff blocks while passing an average of 2.20 for the match. Jesse’s massive night, both offensively and defensively helped the Mariners survive an early 2-0 start to pull out the victory in the hard fought 5 set match.
On Saturday, Jesse continued his attack on the Cascades, as UFV had no answer for Jesse’s offensive on slot as he continued to keep the UFV defense on their toes with his excellent arsenal of shots. Jesse’s aggressive play and increased confidence allowed him to put together another excellent statistical performance on Saturday. He finished the Saturday match with 17 kills, 5 Service Aces, 2 blocks and 8 digs in VIU’s 3-1 win.

Women's player of the weekend TYLAR TURNBULL

Tylar Turnbull, 4th year Middle, led the team offensively all weekend and also provided the squad with some solid net play, leading the team in total blocks for the weekend as well.

Tylar has been having a great year so far and carried on her strong play this weekend. On Friday Tylar led the Mariners with 11 kills, and 5 blocks. On Saturday, Tylar pitched in with 9 kills (second on her team), 5 blocks and 3 aces helping bring the team to a 3-1 victory. The total weekend stats for Tylar were 20 kills, 10 blocks, 6 ace and digs. For a middle in the Women’s conference these are exceptional stats.  Tylar consistently leads our team in kills and blocks and has been a key to helping the Mariner’s bounce back from a tough start.
