Badminton Update

February 1st, 2015

VIU badminton finished second place at the Pacwest in Coquitlam this weekend, Just one match away from first in the team event.
In the individual events 3rd year mariner Melissa Liew had a strong weekend finishing 1st in the Women's Singles without losing a single game and 1st in the Mixed doubles with Graydon Robb again with a perfect record.  Thomas Spencer had the strongest tournament of his VIU career, battling hard and finishing 3rd in Mens Singles and 3rd in Mens doubles with Al Liao who has just joined the VIU team.     Al Liao is first year at VIU but is no stranger to badminton having competed in Taiwan.  He is a very skilled player with a booming smash and in the individual events he partnered two far less experienced team members, brought the best out in his partners, leading them to the 3rd place finish in men's doubles with Spencer and with second year athlete Darby Walker a well deserved 3rd place finish in the very strong mixed draw.  The most exciting match of the weekend was and in the team event where Liao and Robb took out the Langara College veterans Nathan Choi ( twice national collegiate champion) and Hugh Leung in two games.
The mariner squad will be looking to take back first place at the provincials in two weeks time at KPU gymnasium in Surrey.
