GRAYDON ROBB CCAA Badminton Player of the Year

March 1st, 2015

March 4, 2015 – Graydon Robb of the Vancouver Island University Mariners has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s Male Badminton Player of the Year.

Robb received the award this evening at the 2015 CCAA Badminton National Championships in Halifax, N.S.

“Graydon is one of the most exciting players in the CCAA competition,” said Badminton Convenor Alf McGuire. “He is lightning quick but has some unusual shots that he performs at random intervals, making his game very difficult to anticipate.”

Robb, alongside partner Melissa Liew, captured the PACWEST championship in Mixed Doubles. He also led the Mariners to an overall team silver medal at provincials.

In 2014, Robb captured gold in Men’s Doubles at the CCAA Badminton National Championships, where he also received the Fair Play Award. He was also named the VIU Mariners Athlete of the Year in 2014.

Robb has represented Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games. He is currently ranked No. 10 in Men’s Singles in Alberta.

A quiet and unpretentious athlete, Robb brings speed and an exceptional vertical which, along with his inherent creativity, give him a unique game style that is exciting to watch and difficult to defend.

A second year student at VIU, Robb is learning to balance academics, badminton and a music career with an aspiring band. He is also active in the community as a volunteer coach for both high school and elementary.

“A former coach of his told me that when talking to Graydon between games he said something he never said to another player. ‘Graydon bring your crazy stuff.’ Needless to say he did,” said McGuire.

“Graydon has brought his crazy stuff all season in PACWEST.”

Other nominees for the award were Nick Roque of the NAIT Ooks (ACAC), Owen Kurvits of the Redeemer Royals (OCAA) and Greg McGuire of the Mount Allison Mounties (ACAA).
