Mariners sweep CBC to seize Bronze

The 3rd seeded VIU Mariners executed a solid straight-set victory over the #4 CBC Bearcats to seize this year’s Bronze Medal at the PACWEST Championships today. Despite the 3-0 win, this match could not have been closer as both teams dug deep to put away their opponents and close the season in the Top 3.

“It was a close match but we had that little bit of fight left in us from last night’s game to push us through,” states Mariners Head Coach Abe Avender. “It was nice to see our boys step up in the 20’s to get the last few points and close it out. Bronze is the hardest to win because you’ve lost the chance for Gold. Today’s win means a lot to us, especially our fifth-year guys. This is the closest group of athletes I’ve ever coached, from the first guy to the last.”

Third-year setter Ryan Marcellus (Victoria) ran VIU’s middle with confidence today was named Player of the Match for his excellent performance throughout the match. CBC outside hitter Josh Goosen earned Player of the Match for CBC commanding play from both the front and back row. Josh posted 23 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces for a total of 27 offensive points.
