November 1st, 2015

The VIU Mariners Women’s Volleyball team is very excited to announce the signing of two of the top Power Hitter’s in BC.

The first player to sign was Sadie Wilson, a 6 foot Power hitter from Prince of Wales Secondary School. Sadie is a very skilled Volleyball player who is well rounded at all positions from Middle, Rightside as well as Power. Sadie is a very determined student athlete as well as an Honor roll student. She comes with many accolades from her youth volleyball career. She was 5th at the 2015 Beach Nationals and received a Silver medal in the 2015 Beach Provincials. She is also a member of the Thunder Volleyball Club where she was an assistant captain for the U17 Div.2 Gold Medalist team at the Western Canadian Nationals. She was a member of Team BC in 2014 which came finished 4th at the Western Canadian Championships. Sadie led her team to the Gold Medal at the AAA Vancouver City Championships. She received Honorable Mention at The AAA Provincial Championships and was been selected as her High school Athlete of the Year. In Sadie’s spare time she volunteers as the assistant coach for her high schools grade 8 girls volleyball team. “We are so excited to have a player as talented as Sadie join our team. Not only is Sadie a great athlete she is a strong leader and a great person. Her size and ability to end rallies is something we are most excited about,” said exclaimed VIU’s Head coach Shane Hyde. “Sadie is a player I have been watching ever since last season’s AAA Provincials in Parksville. I knew when I saw her play then that she would be perfect as a Mariner,” Hyde continued.

The second player to sign with the Mariner’s is Amanda Matsui, a 6 foot 1 power hitter from Riverside Secondary School.  Amanda’s Riverside High school team is one of the top AAAA team’s in the Province this season and Amanda is one of the main reasons for the success of her team. Amanda is no stranger to success as she comes from a very strong high school volleyball program at Riverside and a very successful club Volleyball team, the Coquitlam Ducks. Amanda’s volleyball resume is quite impressive. She was a member of the 2013 Junior Girls Provincial Silver Medalist, 2013 Canada West Open Silver Medalist, 2014 district AAAA Gold Medalists, 2014 Provincial Bronze Medalists, 2014 U16 Canadian Open Bronze medalists, and the 2015 Provincial Championship Silver Medalists. Individually Amanda has received the MVP of the District championships both in 2012 and 2013. She was the recipient of the 2013 Provincial Championship “Most Inspirational Player” Award. She has received the Riverside Athlete of the year in both 2013 and 2015. She was rewarded with a 1st team Provincial All-Star in 2013, 2014 and 2015. “We are excited to have a player who can physically change a match by herself. “Amanda is a player that will force other teams to key on her based on her power and athleticism.” commented Coach Hyde. “Her size and strength at the net will make her an impact player in the PACWEST immediately,” continued Hyde.

It has been a long time since the Mariners have had two back to back impact signings like this. The last time the Mariner’s had two impact outside hitters sign at the same time was when Leigh Dreher and Lindsay McLoughlin both signed. The following year the Mariner’s went on to win the first ever National Final for BC with a record of 23-0. “I can’t say that we will have the same outcome as we did when Lindsay and Leigh both signed. The league has gotten very strong over the past few years, but I can tell you that these two players will give us an opportunity to get back to the dominant play that the Mariners are used to.” Hyde stated. “I was grinning from ear to ear when I received the news that Sadie had decided to play at VIU then 30 mins later I got the news that Amanda was a Mariner too so it was a great night!” exclaimed Hyde.
