Our Men's basketball team is ranked #1 in Canada and is undefeated in league play. This weekend they will be put to the test when the Northwest Christian University from Eugene , Oregon are in town.

Jason Fortin

In the final league play weekend of the first semester, the VIU Mariners hosted the Langara College Falcons and Quest University Kermodes.

Fifth year forward Jason Fortin (Nanaimo, BC) was outstanding for the Mariners in all aspects of the game as he propelled the Mariners to a two win weekend.

On Friday night the Mariners matched up with the Falcons. Jason was all over the floor with his effort. While being given large defensive duties, Jason was able to finish the game with a stat line of 13 Points, 13 Rebounds, 3 Assists and 5 steals.

Saturday the Mariners faced the Kermodes in a battle of the undefeated teams at 6-0. Throughout the game, Jason was able to bring the same effort from the previous night as he yet again took on key defensive duties. Jason posted a stat line of 16 Points, 13 Rebounds, 6 Assists, 3 blocks and 5 steals.

"Jason was outstanding for us in a big weekend for our team as we closed out league play for first semester" said Mariners Assistant Avneet Brar. "His ability to do so much for us that doesn't appear on the stat sheet and yet have the stats he did for the weekend speak volumes of the outstanding effort he brings day by day to our team."

Sienna Pollard led VIU to two victories in the final weekend of league play before the break. 

On Friday, Sienna scored 31 points had 10 rebounds and 5 assists in a 81-52 win over Langara.  On Saturday, Sienna scored 13 points and had 7 rebounds in a 65-58 win over Quest. 

"Sienna continues to be a force on both ends of the floor providing us with a defensive presence while also putting up big numbers on the offensive end"

Vancouver Island University’s basketball teams closed out the first half of the season the right way.

The VIU Mariners men’s and women’s hoops teams won all their home games this past weekend. The men defeated the Langara Falcons 102-78 Friday and then got past the Quest Kermodes 82-71 on Saturday. VIU’s ladies were 82-51 winners Friday and won 65-58 Saturday.

“Two good wins to close out the first half of the season,” said Bill McWhinnie, coach of the VIU women’s team, in a press release. “We are seeing gradual improvement as the season goes on.”

Sienna Pollard scored 31 points and added 10 rebounds in the blowout win, while Sara Simovic scored 15 and Lanae Adams added 13. The next day it was Adams with 20 points and 10 boards, Simovic with 19 points and 13 boards and Pollard with 13 points.


The men were led Friday by John Thompson, who scored 22 points and dished seven assists. Josh Ross had 21 points and 12 rebounds and Jason Fortin, with 13 points and 13 boards, and Curtis Wilson with 15 points and 12 boards, also had double-doubles. Bryson Cox added 18 points. On Saturday, Thompson’s 19 points led the way. Fortin had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Wilson had 10 and 10 and Chris Parker scored 17.
