Volleyball weekend

In a rare Thursday night match up, VIU takes on the College of the Rockies. They also go at it Friday night !! Women's games at 6pm followed by the men at 8pm , both nights.

VIU Players of the week

Women's - Mikayla Wagner

        This Past weekend the VIU Mariners faced a very strong Douglas College Royals team. The matches was a battle of the top teams in the PACWEST. The Mariners were able to win both matches and take over sole position of 1st place. Leading the charge was second year right side player, Mikayla Wagner. Mikayla was a dominant force all weekend long. On Friday Wagner recorded 10 kills, 1 block and 2 aces along with 6 digs. She had a total of 13 offensive points in only 4 sets. On Saturday the Royals gave the Mariners a strong push back and Wagner was looked at to shoulder most of the offensive play for the Mariners. On Saturday Mikayla was outstanding. She tallied 19 kills, 3 block, 1 ace and 13 digs. Her offensive totals were a team high 23. In total for the weekend Mikayla recorded 29 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces and 19 digs. Her offensive totals were remarkable with totals of 36 offensive points!

                   Mikayla has been a key factor in the Mariner’s strong undefeated run which has had them go undefeated since the opening weekend.  She will be looked at down the stretch to contribute both offensively and defensively in a big way.

Men's - Jesse Bazergui

Jesse Bazergui, the Mariner’s Captain and 5th Year Left Side had an outstanding weekend against the Royals of Douglas College. Jesse’s play was instrumental in the Mariners success and consistency over the weekend. He combined for an amazing 45 total offensive points over the two matches and more importantly for the Mariners, his play lead them to a weekend split against the Top 5 Nationally ranked Douglas Royals.

On Friday night, Jesse had a very strong evening with 17 kills, 10 digs, a service ace and a block. On Saturday, Jesse was incredible. He finished Saturday’s match with 22 kills, 18 digs, 2 service aces and 2 blocks. The Mariners put together their best match of the season on Saturday and Jesse’s play was a major factor in their success against one of the CCAA’s top programs. The Mariners hope that they can take their positive weekend results back to VIU where they will finish their first semester against the College of the Rockies Avalanche.
