Badminton Wins in CR

January 10th, 2016

VIU Badminton team started out the new year with an exhibition event in Campbell River.  It was a double crown for fourth year athlete, Melissa Liew, who was strong and consistent easily winning the Womens A Singles and Womens A Doubles with teammate Helen Cheung.  Melissa paired with DaMin Kan of Victoria to take the B Mixed Doubles over fellow mariners Darby Walker and Wil Rymes who battled through several tough matches to reach the B final.

Robert Foster (first year) also had a great weekend; reaching the semifinal of A Mens Singles before being defeated by eventual winner and former VIU athlete Bryan Cassels 21-17, 24-22.  Foster also reached the A Mixed Doubles semifinal with teammate Helen Cheung and the B Mens Doubles semifinal with mariner Will Poon.  They were defeated by mariner Thomas Spencer and DaMin Kan who went on to take the final convincingly.  Thomas, who raised his game on the weekend, was also the Mens Singles B winner and reached the semifinal in A Mixed doubles with past mariner Jenny Aronson.  In addition to strong womens singles and mixed results Helen Cheung was a finalist in A women singles losing to Melissa Liew.

Mariners next hit the courts at SFU on Jan 22-24 facing Langara, KPU, UBC and SFU.
