Footballer of the week

March 6th, 2016

Over the last 38 years, Bill Merriman has built an exemplary professional coaching career, simply by bringing out the best in his players and his teams. His commitment and dedication to the game and those who play it is readily apparent in his track record.

This season the Mid Isle Mariners U21 team is the recipient of Bill’s knowledge and passion.  The team just completed an undefeated league season, and is now in the semi-finals of George Smith U21 Cup this weekend.

Merriman is well known up and down the island as the head coach of the Vancouver Island University (VIU) men’s soccer team, the technical director at Mid Isle Mariners as well as the technical director of the VIPL Storm Franchise which highlights the number of people affected by his love of the game.

Since 2006, when he was awarded the Nanaimo District Youth Soccer Association (NDYSA) “Coach of the Year” award, Merriman has steadily garnered accolades for his coaching from an increasingly wider audience. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, Merriman was named Coach of the Year by the British Columbia Colleges Athletics Association (BCCAA). Nominated for National Coach of the Year by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association in 2009, Merriman was honoured to take home that title in 2011.  In 2015 he was awarded BC Soccer’s Youth Coach of the Year award.  And now he can add United Football’s Footballer of the Week to his many awards!  Congratulations and good luck to all of your teams as their seasons wrap-up.
