March 13th, 2016

Josh Ross of the Vancouver Island University Mariners has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.

Ross received the award this evening at the 2016 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship banquet, hosted by Keyano College in Fort McMurray, AB.

He led the Mariners to a perfect 21-0 record in the regular season and a PACWEST Championship.

“He had an outstanding season and demonstrated all-around excellence,” said David Munro, CCAA VP Sport Development. “And the Mariners are the No. 1 heading into the National Championship.”

Ross led the conference in rebounds per game (11.4) and he was second in points per game (20.5) and assists per game (4.2). In his first year at VIU, he was named the PACWEST Player of the Year.

He is a lead coach in VIU’s Mini Mariners youth league, where he is responsible for guiding Grade 5-7 athletes through drills and games that teach fundamentals of the game.

“In addition to his on-court success, Josh also gives back to the community,” said Munro. “He is very deserving of the CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year award.”

CCAA Player of the Year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
