Soccer Update

September 25th, 2016

The VIU women's soccer team remains undefeated, with two wins and 4 ties.
This past weekend they defeated Douglas Royals 3-1 and Langara Falcons 1-0.

Here are a few comments from Head Coach Anup Kang .. Saturday vs Douglas.

Last time we played them it ended 5-5 and I thought we were very nervous and made some mistakes that cost us. It was our first league game with some new players, for this game we were focused right from the opening whistle. Having Karen Battie healthy is huge as she is such a strong player that can cause problems for defenders. Our mids played a real strong game, for most part they controlled the tempo of the game, the defence was much better today and really didn't give our opponents much. It was nice to get the 3 points, in our four ties, we've played excellent soccer and were unlucky not get the W.

Sunday vs Langara

We knew Langara was going to be a tough game, it always is with them as they are well coached. We stayed focused for full 90 minutes and gutted out a big win. Emily Rowbotham made a huge save right at the beginning of the match on a breakaway, after that I thought we settled down and controlled most of the play. Carli Rey, Rachel Jones in midfield were fantastic today, Harroop Malli, Nicole Foglietta, Darby Cronan, Zoe Grace and Lexi Fawcett were excellent on the back line. It was nice to see Harroop get that goal, we've been toying with that in training and glad it worked out, and Chloe Gummer was a handful in both of our weekend games, she's a special player. We were able to rotate all 16 outfield players, we have so much depth this year, any one of those players can make a difference and have made a difference in our success to date, one thing with this team, they are focused on the moment and don't look ahead, we will now focus on next weekends big games at Capilano and Quest, this group works so hard at training, they push each other to get to the next level, makes the coaches job easier.

The Vancouver Island Mariners men's soccer team had an interesting weekend, they played two good games with two totally different results .
Saturday the Mariners met up with rivals Douglas Collage and ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 score. The team played some good soccer creating some good scoring opportunities but had no luck around net even missing on a penalty shot in the 2nd half but it was Travis Brown who scored the lone goal off a free kick for the Mariners late the game.
Then Sunday the Mariners squared of against Langara College and started to find the back of the net. The team continued to play good soccer but it was Victor Blasco with 2 ,rookie Billy Bagiopoulos with two and Stephan Ewashko with 1. The Mariners left with a 5-0 victory and a much needed confidence boost. The Mariners have been playing some very exciting soccer but have been struggling to score goals so can only hope to build of this weekend.

Men's Soccer

First year player Billy Bagiopoulus continues to turn heads in the PacWest with his skill and finishing ability.,Billy scored his 2nd and third goal of the season against Langara college and created a number of other chances to help lead VIU to a 5-0 win. Bagiopoulus’s first goal of the game was of highlight quality when he gathered up the ball at centre beat a player out wide and then beat two more players as he cut in front of net and made no mistake. The 2nd goal of the day for Bagiopulus he showed the composure of a veteran player when he was sent in alone on the keeper and made no mistake. Billy Bagiopoulus proved that he is going to be a player to watch in this league going forward.
