Women's Basketball

Weekend Game Summary

A decent weekend,  picked up a split on the road against the top two teams in the league.  "On Friday, the team gutted out a big road win at Douglas.  With about 5 minutes left in the game, leading scorer Avery Snider went down and the team stuck together and was able to pull out the win.  Chantel Went hit two big shots for us on Friday which helped seal the victory". Comments Bill McWhinnie, Head Coach VIU Women's Basketball

Men's Basketball
Weekend Game Summary

Mariner Men's Basketball show progress in a 2 win weekend earning two short handed victories over Douglas (Friday) and Capilano (Saturday).

"On Friday we earned a hard fought victory over Douglas in a slower paced game. Our defence was key for us as we were never able to get into an offensive rhythm. We were paced by our back court trio of Usama, Montell and Bryson who scored 33, 15, and 13 respectively. Kaz did a great job on their league all star point guard Grant Campbell holding him to 11 points and making his night difficult". Comments Matt Kuzminski, Head Coach VIU Men's Basketball.

Saturday was a different story as the pace of play picked up and our guys put on a clinic on both ends of the ball. Defensively our guys had great ball pressure while protecting the paint allowing only three 2pt field goals in the first half. We did not let up in the second half holding Capilano to a season low 60 points, 21 points below their season average. Kaz again was huge for us defensively as he drew the matchup against Greet Gill, a league leader in points and rebounds. Kaz who is one of the tougher players I’ve coached concentrated for 40 minutes, maintaining good positioning, forcing tough catches while putting his body on the line for box outs and charges. Greet finished the game with 3 points. On the offensive end our guys had our most unselfish game of the year. We we’re very aggressive in our drive and kick game often making the extra pass for wide open shots. Usama Zaid has had many good games this year, this may have been his best. He did a great job keeping the pressure on the defense while regularly making the correct play to get us a great shot. Montell Lindgren continues to show great leadership on the floor by making our offense go and Bryson Cox continues to grow as an aggressive and efficient scorer. Jalen Schlegel was able to fight through back spasms to play for us and its clear his versatility makes us so much better. Morgan Proctor continued his improvement scoring 16 points while showing a good effort in defense and rebounding. Chase Hobenshield stepped up and gave us good minutes in Jalen’s absence Friday and Eric D’Andrea’s absence Saturday.

No VIU Basketball this weekend as its a bye weekend.
