Volleyball vs UFV

January 29th, 2017

The Match of the Week lived up to the hype as the PACWEST's 1st place Mariners played the 2nd Place Cascades.

Friday night's battle was exactly that. VIU and UFV split the first, four sets. The crowd was loud and the intensity has a playoff feeling. The Mariners came out to a 8-4 lead in the fifth but the Cascade's battled back to tie the 5th set, 14-14. We were able to side out their next server and then the Mariners setter, Jordan Davis, dumped the ball deep into the back corner to win the match. The Mariners came out on top with a 16-14 victory.

In the Saturdays match, UFV came out with something to prove and took the 1st two sets handily. In the third set, VIU made some personnel changes and was able to rally around some fresh legs and energy from Vedran Obradovich and Carson Kitsul to win the 3rd. The Cascades came out firing in the 4th and built a solid 5 point lead early which ended up being too much for the Mariners to over come which lead to them losing 3-1.

It was an excellent weekend for a few reasons said Head Coach, Abe Avender. We were able to battle hard to win a huge, intense, high level match on Friday. But, the best lesson came on Saturday. We need to be able to put two great matches in a row together in order to do something special this year. Learning about what it's going to take physically and mentally was very important for us. I look forward to seeing how the guys respond this coming weekend with Capilano coming to town.

It was a hard fought battle. UFV was a very strong opponent.
On Friday, we won the first 2 sets dictating the match with hard serving and aggressive offence. ~Then let up a little and UFV gained confidence and picked up their game. We played safe and as a result drpped the 3rd and 4th sets. In the 5th we gained our composure and once again applied the pressure. We took the 5th and final set. Friday Chanteal Cumming, Megan Rosenlund and Amanda Dobbyn, Kelsey Hutt played well for us.

On Saturday the team came out strong once again but half way through the set we let up and UFV pushed back to take a 23-22 lead. After a timeout we came back to take the 1st set 25-23. The next two sets we kept the pressure on and increased our blocking and defence. We took the match in 3 straight sets. Saturday the players that stood out were Mikayla Wagner, Megan Rosenlund, Catie Hegglin. Comments Shane Hyde , Head coach of the VIU women's volleyball team
