Big wins for Men's Basketball

February 5th, 2017

Two big road wins for the Mariner men's basketball team !! 84-76 over the Langara Falcons, Fiday evening and 89-78 over Quest on Saturday.

Friday we went into a tough Langara gym and were able to battle for a come from behind win.  Langara got off to a hot start and we struggled against their zone defense.  going into halftime we were down 44-34.  Our guys did a great job of refocusing coming out of halftime and showed a much better effort.  Improving our rebounding has been a big focus for us and Jalen (16), Usama (12), and Bryson (9) did a great job in that area.  However it was our defense that won the game for us in the second half.  We had a handful of stretches where we strung several stops in a row together. Comment's Matt Kuzminski, Head Coach of the Mariner Men's Basketball team.

Saturday was a snowy drive up to Quest to face a team that is always tough to play, home or away.  Saturday was no different.  Quest did their best to control the tempo by slowing it down and running offense late into the shot clock.  The Mariners were able to build up a large lead of 20 points in the second half but Quest continued to chip away making timely three’s.   Usama Zaid and Jalen Schlegel were big again.  Usama finished with 26 points and 8 rebounds while Jalen added 23 and 8 while going 11/12 from the field on the night.

In a first place showdown on Friday night against the Langara Falcons, Jalen was outstanding on both ends of the floor as the Mariners went on to win 84-76. Jalen finished the game with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Throughout the game, Jalen was able to move the ball against the Langara zone and alter shots on the defensive end of the floor
Saturday at Quest, Jalen had one of his most efficient games he has had all year for the Mariners. Jalen finished the game with 23 Points (11/12 FG) and 8 Rebounds as the Mariners went on to win 89-78.

Next up, home games this weekend versus Capilano and Douglas
