Men's Basketball update:

Two more wins for the M's 93-73 Capilano and 75-59 over Douglas

Head Coach, Matt Kuzminski comments ... Friday we struggled early as Capilano came out and outworked us early.  We did not have the energy and enthusiasm we needed to start the game and as a result went down by double digits.  Our second unit came in and did a great job of establishing the way we wanted to play.  Nick Xylinas, Trevor Davidson and Chase Hobenshield did a good job increasing our defensive pressure and communication.  The second unit erased the lead and when our starters returned they played much better.  Montell was able to put a lot of pressure on the defense attacking the basket creating opportunities for him self and others.  Usama did not have his best shooting night be he controlled the defensive glass and started our break from there.  After the first quarter our defense was key for us.  We can be great for stretches as seen in the second quarter where Cap scored only 10 points.  Going forward we will need more consistency there.

Saturday our defense was engaged early.  From the tip our guys were communicating, in stance and playing with a high level of effort.  We were able to hold Douglas to only 24 first half points.  We did a great job of keeping them out of the paint early and we forced contested jump shots.  In the third quarter the pace completed slowed down as Douglas shot 22 second half free throws. Kaz Kobayashi did a great job of trying to get us back to he pace we wanted to be at.  He pushed the ball in transition breaking down the defense early allowing us to play off his penetration.   Jalen and Usama both his double figures in rebounding.

MBBALL Player of the Week: Kazutoki Kobayashi

On Friday Night, Kaz guarded Capilano Forward Greet Gill who is currently averaging 18 points per game. Through Kaz' relentless defence and work ethic, Kaz was able to hold his opponent to 6 points on 3 of 11 shooting from the field. Kaz also contributed 9 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists in 20 minutes of play in a 93-73 victory.

Saturday afternoon the Mariners hosted the Royals and went on to win 74-59. Kaz was able to hold Royals forward 4/10 from the field. Kaz contributed 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 32 minutes of play.

Women's Basketball update:

Two tough losses 52-43 to Capilano and 64-47 to Douglas

We competed with both Cap and Douglas for 3 quarters, but with only 7 healthy bodies, we ran out of gas in the 4th quarter. I was pleased with how we competed for the first 3 quarters, we will just have to figure out how to be fresh in the 4th quarter. Comments Head Coach Bill McWhinnie
