Men's Volleyball weekend review

February 12th, 2017

The Mariners Men's Volleyball Team has a successful Week 12, which included a make-up match from Week 11. Thursday night the Mariners faced theCapilano Blues at home. The Mariners started slow but were able to withstand a first set loss to Capilano and win the next 3 sets to close out the Blues in 4 sets. The Mariners had excellent nights from Devon Jennings, Zach Grigg and Braydon Brouwer on the wings. Friday night had the Mariners at Douglas College to take on the Royals. In similar fashion to Thursday, the Mariners dropped the first set but then came roaring back to win the next 3 sets for the victory. This win earned the Mariners their 18th win of the season and proved to be a great learning experience for some of the Mariners that entered the match and made a huge difference off the bench. Jeff Webb was absolutely outstanding off the bench on Friday night. He was able to come in and bring a spark of energy and some much needed offensive prowess to help close out the Royals in 4 sets. In Saturday's match the Mariners struggled to find some consistency and the DC men came out hard and dictated most of the match. The Mariners were unable to find a way to steal a second victory but, did their best, pushing the Royals to a 5th set and losing 16-14. Ryan Marcellus, Jeff Webb and Braydon Brouwer performed well after three hard fought matches in three nights. The unsung hero of the weekend was Jared Parhar, whom was able to step-up after an injury to Middle Blocker, Wayne Woyciehouski and played a huge role in the Mariners success this past weekend. The Mariners take their 18-3 record and first place standing to Capilano on Tuesday and then complete their season with home and home series against the Chargers of Camosun College. Men's Volleyball PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Braydon Brouwer

Mariners super sophomore, Braydon Brouwer, put together another fantastic weekend for the Mariners in Week 12. Braydon’s athleticism and high level performances helped the Mariners inch closer towards locking down the number one seed for the upcoming Provincial Championships being hosted at VIU. The Mariner’s Left Side played a significant role in all three matches for VIU this past week. Braydon’s all round ability and on-court confidence helped the Mariners to win 2 of 3 of their Week 12 matches. VIU was forced to play 3 matches in three nights in order to make up for one of the postponed Week 11 matches due to snow. Braydon combined for 51 total offensive points with 42 Kills, 7 Blocks, 2 Service Aces, 31 Digs and passed an outstanding 2.27 over the 3 Matches.

Thursday night against the Capilano University Blues, Braydon finished the night with 14 Kills, 2 Blocks and 9 Digs and led the Mariners to a 3-1 win at VIU. In Friday nights match, Braydon put together another excellent showing. He finished the night with 13 Kills, 2 Blocks and 9 Digs. He led the Mariners to their 18th win of the season with the win over the Royals at Douglas College. On Saturday, continued his great play with another very well rounded performance with 15 Kills, 2 Service Aces, 3 Blocks and 13 Digs.

Braydon’s on-court demeanor and exceptional talent has been a big reason for the Mariners success this season and the Men’s volleyball program at VIU is extremely excited to have Braydon for many years to come.
