Abe Avender of the VIU Mariners has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year.

He received the award this evening at the 2017 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship banquet, hosted by Fanshawe College in London, ON.

“Abe has once again proven why he is considered one of the top coaches not only in the PACWEST, but also in the CCAA,” said Ray Sarkis, CCAA Men’s Volleyball Convenor. “He is to be commended on the improvement he has made with the VIU program.”

Avender led the Mariners to a 21-3 record and first-place finish in the PACWEST as VIU improved upon a 14-10 record a season ago.

Building a program that encourages student-athletes to be successful on and off the court in all aspects of life is important to Avender. This season, VIU came together by putting aside individual egos and working toward a common goal. A work ethic that is second to none has also been instrumental in their success.

Avender is an Official Sport HealthTM Partner with Canadian Sport Centre Pacific/Pacific Sport, where he lectures and educates young athletes in all aspects of Sports Health and Performance. His partnership with Pacific Sport has allowed him to impact many athletes by educated them on what it takes to become a high-performance athlete, focusing on nutrition, sleep and athlete recovery.

As a Doctor of Chiropractor, Avender is involved in the treatment and recovery of many elite level athletes. He has recently completed his Sports Medicine First Responder Certification to advance his sideline acute care management of athletes and is also a member of the Active Release Technique Ironman Canada Treatment Team at the Whistler, BC Ironman Competition.

CCAA Coach of the Year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
