BOX SCORE

The VIU Men's basketball had to settle for a 4th place finish, being defeated by the hosts Holland Hurricanes on their home court.

CCAA Player of the Year Usama Zaid didn’t make things easy for the Hurricanes, as he dropped a tournament-high 55 points, to go along with 11 rebounds in the loss. Zaid was named player of the game for the Mariners.

VIU got off to a hot start from three early in the first quarter, but the Hurricanes were able to weather the storm and tie the game, 31-31, going into the second.

Zaid, who had two personal fouls in the first, picked up his third foul with 8:10 left in the second quarter and spent the remainder of the frame on the bench.

With the CCAA’s Player of the Year on the bench, the Hurricanes took advantage, outscoring the Mariners 27-11 in the quarter, taking a 58-42 lead going into halftime.

Zaid picked up his game in the second half, but the Hurricanes as a team were too much.
