NANAIMO — Wyatt Brook of the Vancouver Island University golf team has been named a PACWEST All-Star.
The 18-year-old had a standout season with first place finishes in two of the four PACWEST tournaments.
In his rookie campaign Brook finished fifth in the overall standings and ended with a cumulative score of 580.
The Kamloops product ended up in a tie for twelfth in the first tournament of the year at the Okanagan Golf and Country Club, and he was awarded first place after an opponent had eligibility issues at the VIU tournament at Morningstar in Parksville.
Just a week after that Brook won at Highland Pacific in Victoria, and finally finished tied for thirteenth in Abbotsford last weekend.
The VIU tournament was a springboard for Brook.
He was able to string together four solid rounds in a row, including a career best in Victoria at the end of September.
"Things just started clicking. I started making some birdies, then I shot the lowest round ever in my life with a 66. Then I came out with the win," said Brook.
The business finance student had a goal of winning one of the PACWEST tournaments this season, and now he's qualified for the CCAA Nationals.
Brook will be going to Oshawa on Saturday.
He'll be playing practice rounds next Sunday and Monday before the tournament itself on October 17-20.
This will be his last of nearly 30 tournaments this year.
In the summer Brook plays out of Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops and some of his major 2017 events were the BC Boys Junior Championship and the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
He ended up in a tie for sixteenth at the BC tournament but didn't make the cut at the Canadian championship.
Brook's rookie PACWEST season was the highlight for the VIU Mariners in 2017, but both the men's and women's teams are filled with first and second year students.
With Brook poised to lead the way, VIU should challenge to be one of the top PACWEST teams in 2018.
