Soccer Celebration

October 15th, 2017

A record 16 senior athletes were recognized at the final home game this past weekend. The celebration took place between the Women's and Men's game, Stuey was banging his drum, coaches gave speaks and lots of photo were taken. Here are just a few from Northfeild photography PHOTO GALLERY

Prior to the celebration the women's team played Douglas Royals to a 2-2 draw. The Mariners went up 1-0 on a Karen Battie goal in the 19th minute, Douglas scored twice in the second half 55th and 59th minute to go ahead. In dramatic fashion Mariners Chloe Gummer tied it up late in the game to salvage a single point. Saturdays match with Langara Falcons saw the Mariners trailing early 1-0 on a goal in the 9th minute, Langara notched another late in the first half. VIU battled back with a Chloe Gummer goal early in the second half and had numerous chances late in the game , but could not convert.

"Langara caught us off guard with a change in style and we failed to adapt and got punished. In the second half the players were phenomenal but sadly there wasn't enough time. On Sunday we started as we finished on Saturday. Dominating a top side the team stuck to their tasks. After conceding 2 in five minutes I was proud of how we responded to tie the game. We are showing progress at the right time but must now demonstrate focus and consistency when the pressure is on." remarks Head Coach of the Women's Soccer program Kevin Lindo

VIU Men dominated their opponents this weekend ! A 6-0 win over Langara followed by a 3-0 victory over Douglas. VIU's Goalie David Turkstra has now recorded shutouts or clean sheets in soccer terms, in 4 consecutive games.Scoring Saturday was Aly Adib (2), Stefan Cukovic, Joel Harry, Fernando Fenollosa, Niko Cristante. Sundays match Stefan Cukovic got his second goal of the weekend and Victor Blasco/Jordan De Graaf each got one.

The teams now travels to the lower mainland this weekend to take on Quest and Capilano, then the PACWEST Championships in Squamish Oct 27-28.
