Week 1 split for Men's Volleyball

October 15th, 2017

The Mariner Men’s Volleyball Team kicked off the 2017-18 season in Victoria against Island Rivals, the Camosun College Chargers. The Mariners came out well in the first set against the the Chargers, winning 25-22. The Chargers fought back to win the 2nd set in a tight back and forth battle, 27-25. The Mariners came out flat in the 3rd set, getting down early and couldn’t find any consistency which led to a 25-19 loss. In the 4th set the Chargers came out to an early lead and VIU wasn’t able to answer resulting in a 3-1 win for the Chargers. It was a match that was filled with a lot of unforced errors and poor decision making by the Mariners.
On a positive note from Friday, 2nd Year Left Side Jeff Webb had an outstanding night, leading the Mariners offence.

The Mariners came out strong again on Saturday against the Chargers, winning 25-15 in the first set. The Chargers responded with a very convincing win in the 2nd set, 25-18. In-between the 2nd and 3rd set coach Avender challenged his Mariners to compete at a higher level with more pride in their performance. This was accepted and resulted in the most dominating set of the young season, with the Mariners pounding the Chargers 25-8. In the much more competitive 4th set the Mariners closed out the Chargers with aggressive serving and some excellent block defence which led to the Mariners winning the 4th set 25-18. 1st Year Mariner Setter, Keal Prince put together and excellent debut leading a balance and stable offensive attack. The leftside attackers Braydon Brouwer and Jeff Webb were outstanding both in serve receive and offensively.

"Overall is was a good weekend, we can learned a lot Friday in how we can deal with adversity and were able to show some excellent resiliency and fight on Saturday to come out strong and dictate most of the match. We wanted to answer our poor Friday performance as the team knew we had much more quality than we showed on Friday night.
Saturday’s result was a good way to leave the gym where in March the CCAA Men’s National Championships will be hosted. We hope to have 3 more wins in that gym this season" says Coach Avender.
