Going For GOLD !!

November 5th, 2017

The VIU Mariners offense fired on all cylinders after a first half deficit, defeating the NAIT Ooks 6-1 to advance to Saturday’s Gold Medal Game at the 2017 CCAA Men’s Soccer National Championship.

The Ooks opened the scoring just 16 minutes in as Ali Musse’s free kick slipped through the legs of David Turkstra for the early advantage for the Alberta Champions.

Just four minutes later, Hussein Behery was taken down in the box, sending Shun Takano to the penalty spot for the second time in as many nights.

Takano would once again turn his back to the keeper, before turning around and charging in to bury the ball in the low left corner to tie the game.

The Mariners weren’t done in the first half, taking the lead as Chris Merrimen’s free kick cross was volleyed in by defender Ryan McCurdy with a fantastic finish.

After halftime, Mariner substitute Fernando Fenollosa finished off a brilliant play with a shot to the left corner after sneaking down the right side all alone.

Jordan Degraaf fired a laser to the top corner off a brilliant strike from a great run, before McCurdy got his second goal of the game finishing off a similar play to his first on a Takano cross.

Takano would not stop on this night, as he executed a perfect finish on a breakaway in the 71st minute to make it 6-1.

NAIT Captain Zach Kaiser was the Ooks player of the game, while McCurdy earned the honours for VIU.

The Mariners will now meet the Douglas Royals in an All-PACWEST Gold Medal Game Saturday at 4:30. The Ooks face the Holland Hurricanes in a Bronze Semi-Final at 5:30 on Friday night.
