CCBC Baseball Championships

May 6th, 2018

The 2018 VIU Mariner baseball season is coming to an end, CCBC Championships this weekend in Kamloops.

A successful preseason which included a trip to Arizona, was followed by a 7-0 start to the CCBC season. Unfortunately the team struggled near the end of the season losing 10 in a row.

Congratulations to the Mariners that made the CCBC All-Star team ... catcher Lucas Galloway (Altario, AB), shortstop Brodan Bydeweg (Langley, BC), third baseman Liam Balance (Parksville, BC) and outfielder Devin Heck (Camrose, AB).

#2 Okanagan College vs # 5 Vancouver Island
VIU wins 16-9

OC's pitchers couldn't hold down the VIU offense as the Mariners ran away with a 16-9 victory.  Lucas Galloway and Connor Bronson paced the Mariners offense combing to drive in 7 runs.  The Coyotes at the plate couldn't keep up as Davis Todosichuk was 2-5 with 4 RBI.

GAME 3

# 5 Vancouver Island University vs # 1 Prairie Baseball Academy

VIU wins 3-0

Tyler Ulrich threw a complete game shutout as the Mariners took care of the # 1 seed by a score 3-0.  At the plate the Mariners were led by Liam Ballance went 3-4 with 1 RBI.  PBA's Scott Gillespie took the loss going 9 innings.

GAME 1 of the CCBC Championships

Chalk up a win for the VIU Baseballl (#5) team 10-8 over University of Calgary Dinos (#6), up 10-3 going into the 9th, Dino's made it interesting scoring 5 runs. 

VIU starter Austin Gurr went 4 innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen and Johan Steenkan who picked the win in two innings work.  Jordan Smith for the Dinos went 5 innings, giving up 6 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts in the loss.  Mariners hitters Broden Bydeweg led the way going 3-5 with 4 rbi and Dylan Kirby went 3-5 with 2rbi.  Dinos hitters Matt Korman paced the offense going 2-4 with 3 rbi while Brayden Saunders went 2-4.
