Big Volleyball weekend !!

November 4th, 2018

This weekend the top 2 volleyball teams in the PACWEST face off in the VIU Gym Friday and Saturday. Douglas College women and men are # 2 in the PACWEST and VIU women and men are #1, should make for some awesome games.
Last weekend on the road our women's team defeated the Capilano Blues twice and remain undefeated at 8-0 , while the men split with Capilano suffering their first loss of the season.

Here are a few words from Head Coach of the Men's Volleyball team Dr Abe Avender.

Week 4 was a excellent learning opportunity for the Mariners Men’s Volleyball squad as they took their 6-0 record to Capilano University to face the 4-0 Blues. Friday night's match was a 5 set marathon of emotions with tons ups and downs for the Mariners. The Mariners started the match very well by winning the first set in convincing fashion. The Blues responded with 2 straight set wins in the 2 and 3 sets. VIU fought back in the 4th set winning 25-15 to push the match to a 5th and deciding set. In the 5th set Capilano came out with some aggressive serves and got up early on the Mariners. We couldn’t climb back after going down 5 points in the 5th, said coach Avender.
After the match, there was a lot of excellent learning opportunities for the Mariner Men as they may have gone into the match with less focus and urgency than they should of. The Mariners made a huge amount of mental errors which led to major shifts in momentum against the Blues. We needed to be much better to beat a team like Capilano as they worked harder and were more focused than us on Friday and was reflected in the final score.
On Saturday day the Mariners came out and played the most complete match of their season. We came out with a much more focused mind set and followed our game plan from the first point to the last point and beat the Blues 3-0. The match was better in all facets for the Mariners, but most importantly, the error management, which pressured Capilano right from the start. We learnt a lot from Friday night and really showed how good we can be if we play a complete focused match. The Mariners are home against the undefeated Douglas College Royals in Week 5 and look forward to an excellent completive match on Friday and Saturday

Head Coach of the VIU women's Volleyball team Shane Hyde had this to say about wins over Capilano.

The Mariners took on a very strong and determined Capilano Blues team, this past weekend. The Mariners hd just came off 2 weekends that saw them sweep their opponents in straight sets. The Capilano team was ready for the challenge and played with some incredible defense and ran a very fast offence which made the Mariners dig in and were forced to play a tough weekend of volleyball. The Mariners showed their balanced offence with hitters from everywhere. The team was led by 1st year rookie sensation Karoline Tormena who recorded 24 kills in only 7 sets. The Mariners had a strong middle presence from both Amanda Dobby and Taylor Wickson. Capilano played some incredible defense both days but the Mariners offence was just too dynamic and balanced and as a result the VIU squad kept their undefeated record alive. Other strong players to note were rightside player Andrea Cancovic, Setter Chantelle Cumming, and both liberos Keira Christenson and Josie Heeney. The Mariners will now prepare for the battle of #1 and #2 in the country when they take on the Douglas Royals this upcoming weekend at home.
