VIU hopes scorer will be a star The VIU Mariners needed some star power, and were able to add it. Justin King, a new swingman for Vancouver Island University’s men’s basketball team, arrived in town this month as the squad looks toward the 2014-15 season. Big things are expected from the newcomer from Las Vegas after he was recruited by VIU coach Matt Kuzminski this past winter.

The U14/U15 Jr. Mariners boys club basketball team will be holding open tryouts April 14th from 5:30-8pm at the VIU gym. Mark Simpson and Matt Kuzminski will be coaching the team which will have two practices a week and attend 4 tournaments in Vancouver.

Vancouver Island University’s basketball court continues to attract the city’s top high school hoops talent. The VIU Mariners men’s team announced last week the signing of Tyler Radelja for the 2014-15 Pacific Western Athletic Association season. Radelja led the Wellington Wildcats senior AAA boys to provincials this past season and was chosen as a tournament all-star.

VIU basketball adds high-profile players from U.S The VIU Mariners men’s basketball team needed to add some talent, and it’s done just that. Vancouver Island University’s men’s b-ball coach Matt Kuzminski announced last week the signings of Americans Justin King and Kadeem Stewart. King, a 6-foot-4 swingman/forward from Las Vegas, has experience playing in Canada. In 2011-12 he played at Thompson Rivers University where he led the CIS Canada West in scoring with 23.1 points per game and was third in rebounding with 10.1 per game.

Basketball Provincial medallists

Vancouver Island University's Mariners basketball programs took home two medals from provincials, a silver for the men and a bronze for the women. The Mariners men went head-to-head and against the Langara Falcons in the gold medal final on Saturday night, but came up just short and lost 90-84.

Mariners haul in Bball awards

Vancouver Island University's Mariners basketball programs have hauled in a pile of league awards, just in time for playoffs. The Pacific Western Athletic Association's provincial basketball championships begin today at Douglas College and VIU will come armed with a host of all stars, a player of the year and a coach of the year. After a record breaking season, the Mariners (20-1) saw Bill McWhinnie named women's basketball coach of the year and point guard Jocelyn Jones chosen as player of the year.

2014 Basketball Provincials

Vancouver Island University's basketball teams both put themselves in position to play for a championship. The VIU Mariners men's and women's b-ball teams head to the Lower Mainland this week (Feb. 27-March 1) for Pacific Western Athletic Association provincials at Douglas College. The VIU women (20-1) ended their season with a 70-61 loss to the Camosun Chargers on Friday in Victoria, coming up just short of an undefeated season, but they are still the favourites going into the tournament.
