Woodlands Bryson Cox will play for VIU

Nanaimo’s highest-scoring high schooler will be staying in the Harbour City. The Vancouver Island University Mariners men’s basketball team announced last week that Bryson Cox of Woodlands Secondary School has committed to the program for 2013-14.

National Title in first year for Matt Kuzminski

For the first time in 19 seasons the men’s basketball team earned the National Championship title for VIU—and head coach Matt Kuzminski accomplished the feat in his very first attempt at the helm. The Mariners qualified for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship after a silver-medal performance at the PacWest Provincials in Feb. From there, VIU defeated Red Deer College, Sheridan College, and Holland College en-route to their first Nationals gold medal since the Malaspina University-College era.

Brandon Jones - PACWEST Athlete of the Week

The 2nd seeded Mariners began their tournament against 3rd ranked Quest in the first men’s semi-final. VIU looked rusty out of the gates beginning by turning the ball over on their first three possessions. However, star Mariners import Brandon Jones quickly took over, scoring VIU’s first 9 points, and pushing them out to a 24-13 lead after one.
