For the month of May, VIU’s Mariner’s Athletics and Recreation is encouraging all students, staff, faculty and their families to engage with them through a number of virtual activities aimed at building community. Follow our social media channels to find engaging pre-recorded workouts; wellness challenges; the “Meals with Mike” cooking series; tips, tricks and vlogs with cool people; re-lived moments from recent National Championships and even an old-fashioned game of HORSE (the basketball game). Keep an eye out for our Mariner athletes as they share their at-home training tips and health regimes. We will continue to add new content so be sure to bookmark this page for the full schedule. Weekly schedule reminders will come out on social media every Monday.
On the first three Fridays in May, we will post a simple challenge to our Instagram feed. Share to your story what the challenge is (see challenges below); tag with @MarinersRecreation and #VIUWeekendWellness, and we will repost. Complete all three challenges to be entered into a draw for a swag bag from Mariners Athletics & Recreation.
May 1-3: Share a healthy breakfast that gets you going on the weekend.
May 8-10: Complete 20 minutes minimum of indoor activities per day such as at-home workouts or online fitness classes.
May 15-17: Complete 20 minutes minimum per day of outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, biking or running.
Follow along every Friday in May at 10 am when Mike James, Gym Attendant, shares his favourite healthy meals. These are pre-recorded so be aware that you will not get your ingredient substitution questions answered right away. Enjoy the recipes and a great start to a healthy cookbook. Share your favourite recipes with the community – tag @MarinersRecreation and #VIUMealswithMike.
Keep any eye out on Mondays for engaging tips, tricks and challenges from our Mariner athletes as they stay in game shape for next season.
Get your sweat on at lunchtime every Tuesday! Kordell Bergen, Gym Attendant, shares his easy at-home, full-body workouts with the help of women’s volleyball star and four-time National Champion, Andrea Cankovic. Unable to make it Tuesday? These are pre-recorded workouts, so access them all week long. By the end of May, you will have a series you can follow all week.
Be sure to follow @MarinersRecreation on Facebook and Instagram. On May 25, we will post an activity card that you will need to screenshot. For every day you complete 20 minutes of activity, share the activity card on your story with an X on that day, as well as a short video or picture of you during the activity, tag @MarinersRecreation and #VIUStormtheStairs. For every day you complete a task you have Stormed the Stairs. Let's see how many times the VIU Community can do this in one week!

campVIU is encouraging you to stay active at home with weekly active and healthy living challenges.
