Advanced Hiking - Mt Arrowsmith

This program is a guided hike into the Mt. Arrowsmith area. This trip requires students to hike for up to 5 hours, with lots of steep sections going both up and down the mountain. Mt. Arrowsmith is 1817m (6000ft.) in elevation and students can expect inclement weather conditions. You need to be healthy and fit to participate in this activity.

This program is a guided hike into the Mt. Moriarty area.  This trip requires students to hike for up to 5 hours, with lots of steep sections going both up and down the mountain. Mt. Moriarty is 1610m (5600ft.) in elevation and students can expect inclement weather conditions. You need to be healthy and fit to participate in this activity.

This program is a multiple session offering designed to give students more experience in sea kayaks compared to our one day sea kayak activity. Over the course of the individual sessions students learn basic sea kayaking techniques and get to paddle in different locations around Nanaimo.

 Outrigger Canoe

This is an afternoon canoe trip that focuses on paddling a six-person ocean going outrigger canoe (OC6). This sport is an incredible workout, and students can expect to raise their heart rates as well have some fun. VIU has a variety of different outrigger canoes to select from and students organize themselves into teams and go for a paddle and race each other in OC6, OC4, and sometimes OC2. 

White Water Kayaking After Class

White Water Kayaking Information

 

 

This is a fun and exciting multi-day experience of introductory white water river kayaking.  Over the course of three sessions we cover the following topics and skills: how to fit a river kayak, how to outfit the kayak, how to do a wet exit, basic strokes, safety considerations, river feature identification and running moving water in a river kayak. To register for this activity you must have completed the weekend learn to white water kayak activity.

This is a one-hour kayak rolling and practice sessions in Westwood Lake.  Students will learn how to fit and adjust a white water kayak, how to enter a kayak and launch from a beach, how to do a wet exit, and finally the progression towards rolling a kayak.  This is a flexible and fun course and is strongly encouraged if students want to register for our Learn to White Water Kayak sessions.

This is a series of one-hour kayak rolling and practice sessions in the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre pool located at 741 Third St.  Students will learn how to fit and adjust a white water kayak, how to enter a kayak in the pool, how to do a wet exit, and finally the progression towards rolling a kayak.

This is a shuttle service and climbing night at the Romper Room indoor rock climbing center in Nanaimo. Wednesday evenings are VIU night with discounted drop in climbing available for VIU students and paid for when you register for this program. This is a fun and social evening with other students.
