This is a day trip to the Mt. Washington Alpine Resort or Forbidden Plateau area to experience backcountry snowshoeing or hiking depending on the weather.  The trip leaves from the resort’s base area or trailhead and explores the local area and trails of Mt. Washington, neighboring Strathcona Provincial Park, or the Forbidden Plateau area.

Introductory snowshoe lessons are provided by Vancouver Island University staff.  You will be outside for the majority of the trip, especially if you have signed up for the Forbidden Plateau location, so please be prepared!

  This trip is a guided day hike up to Rosewall Falls. Rosewall waterfall is located north of Nanaimo and is accessed through a rough trail network.  The trail is steep in spots and the weather could be challenging, so please be prepared.

Cross Country Skiing Information

 

This is a day trip to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort to cross country ski. Introductory cross country ski lessons are provided by VIU staff for interested students. We generally ski in the morning/lesson and return to Mt. Washington’s Raven Lodge for lunch. In the afternoon we ski again and enjoy the beautiful mountain trails in the area. Mt. Washington has a well-developed cross country ski trail network with trails suitable for all experience levels.

 

Avalanche Awareness

Avalanche Awareness Information

This is a basic course that explores the avalanche phenomenon. We spend the day touring on skis or snowshoes and discussing different elements of winter backcountry travel. Topics include avalanche beacons and their use complete with practice opportunities, recognition of avalanche terrain, the avalanche forecast, and an introduction to some of the slope stability tests used in the field. This is a very informative day trip and full of useful information.  Please be prepared for the winter environment. This is not equivalent to an AST 1 course (2.5 days) but is a great introduction to avalanche safety.

Hiking - Juan de Fuca Information

This program is a guided hike into a section of the Juan de Fuca Trail Provincial Park. This activity explores a section of trail that has big beaches, waterfalls, suspension bridge, and massive old-growth forests. We generally spend the day hiking and exploring the area around Sombrio Beach and cover approximately 5 to 7kms of the trail. The trail can be steep in sections and is always wet and very muddy. This hike is suitable for fit beginners and intermediate hikers.

Want to make new friends while trying snowshoeing? Talk to Me Events focus on creating connections among students through facilitated adventure activities. So come out and meet someone new! This is a day trip to the Mt. Washington Alpine Resort area to experience backcountry snowshoeing. The trip leaves from the resort’s base area and explores the local area and trails of Mt. Washington and neighboring Strathcona Provincial Park. Introductory snowshoe lessons are provided by Vancouver Island University staff. Standup Paddle Board Information

 This one-day session is designed as an introduction to the popular new sport of standup paddleboarding (SUP).  Over the course of the activity, students learn basic SUP paddling techniques. Students learn how to prepare for a SUP day trip, how to get on and standup on the board, and basic strokes.

River Rafting

Nanaimo River

River Rafting Information

This is a fun and exciting day of river rafting. The upper Nanaimo River is the river run we uses for this rafting trip. Students are given an extensive pre-trip information season before we get on the river and go rafting. All course participants are given a full wetsuit that is worn while in the rafts. The river is very scenic and has some excellent whitewater rapids that we run in the inflatable rafts. We normally have lunch midway down our river run. Students should expect to carry rafts and rafting gear to and from the river.

Surfing Information

  
 This is a fun and exciting day of surf instruction and surfing in the Tofino area. While on the beach students are given a pre-trip information session covering the following topics: surf formation, surfing hazards, personal hazards, and a how to surf lesson.  After the information session students then spend the rest of the day surfing.
