MID-WEEK ACTIVITIES

Kayak Rolling

This is a series of one-hour kayak rolling and practice sessions in the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre pool located at 741 Third St. Students will learn how to fit and adjust a white water kayak, how to enter a kayak in the pool, how to do a wet exit, and finally the progression towards rolling a kayak. This is a flexible and fun evening course and depending on interest we teach kayaking stokes, advanced rolling, or sea kayak re-enters and rescues.

Indoor Rock Climbing

This is a shuttle service between the VIU campus and the Romper Room indoor rock climbing center. Tuesday evenings are VIU night with drop in climbing available for VIU students and paid for when you register for this program. This is a fun social evening with other students.

Night Skiing

This is a night skiing event hosted by VIU’s Outdoor Recreation. The group leaves the campus and travels to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort to enjoy an evening of night skiing. Once at the resort you are free to ski/board on your own or in a group with other students. This activity includes a lift ticket and your transportation to and from the resort..

River Rafting

This is a fun and exciting day of river rafting. The upper Nanaimo River is the river run we use for this rafting trip. Students are given an extensive pre-trip information season before we get on the river and go rafting. The river is very scenic and has some excellent white-water rapids that we run in the inflatable rafts.

WEEKEND ACTIVITIES

Snowshoe

This is a day trip to the Mt. Washington Alpine Resort or Forbidden Plateau area to experience backcountry snowshoeing. The trip leaves from the resort’s base area or trailhead and explores the local area and trails of Mt. Washington and neighboring Strathcona Provincial Park, or Forbidden Plateau.

Waterfall Hiking

This trip is a guided day hike up to Rosewall Falls. Rosewall waterfall is located north of Nanaimo and is accessed through a rough trail network. The trail is steep in spots and the weather could be challenging, so please be prepared.

Cross Country Skiing

This is a day trip to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort to cross country ski. Introductory cross country ski lessons are provided by VIU staff for interested students. Enjoy the beautiful mountain trails that Mt. Washington has to offer.

Indoor Rock Climbing

This one-day session is designed as a basic introduction to the sport of indoor rock climbing. Students will learn rope handling techniques, knots, and indoor rock climbing techniques. We use the Romper Room indoor climbing center as our location for the day and VIU’s outdoor recreation program staff delivers the lesson and supervise students throughout the day. You will get pumped!

Hiking

There are two hikes offered in the January semester. The first program is a guided hike into a section of the Juan de Fuca Trail Provincial Park. This trip explores a section of the trail that has big beaches, waterfalls, a suspension bridge, and massive old growth forests.

The second program is a guided hike into Botanical Beach Provincial Park. This trip explores a section of the trail that has big beaches, rugged west coast sites, fossils and massive old growth forests. Botanical Beach is famous for its tide pools so lots of the day will spent exploring the intertidal zone.

Sea Kayaking

This one-day session is designed as an introduction to sea kayaking. Over the course of the day students learn basic sea kayaking techniques. Students learn how to prepare for a sea kayak day trip, how to enter and exit a kayak, and basic strokes. The rest of the day is spent improving upon and learning new skills, paddling, and exploring the ocean.

River Rafting

This is a fun and exciting day of river rafting. The upper Nanaimo River is the river run we uses for this rafting trip. Students are given an extensive pre-trip information season before we get on the river and go rafting. All course participants are given a full wetsuit that is worn while in the rafts. The river is very scenic and has some excellent white-water rapids that we run in the inflatable rafts.

OVERNIGHT ACTIVITIES

How to Build Snow Shelters

This program is a basic winter skills course that will show you how to build a number of different snow shelters. Students will learn how to build a snow cave, trench, modified trench, quince and maybe an igloo. The course takes place at Mt. Washington Alpine Resort in Strathcona Provincial Park.

Storm Watching Weekend

This is a fun and exciting weekend of hanging out in the town of Ucluelet and doing some shorter hikes to watch the winter storms and big surf pound the west coast of Vancouver Island. We have lots of options for students to explore over the weekend and these include different hikes within Pacific Rim National Park and the Wild Pacific Trail in the town of Ucluelet plus exploring the town of Tofino too.

Spring Break Surfing (Intensive)

This is a fun and exciting way to learn surfing over the four day surf spring break intensive. Each day we go surfing in the morning and afternoon with some time off mid-day to rest and learn surf theory. Students will learn how to pop up, turtle roll long boards, sit and spin, paddling techniques, how to catch green waves and proper surf techniques to get you moving down the wave face. Classroom theory consists of surf forecasting, wave and weather creation and video review work to look watch your rides and make improvements to your personal surfing.

Surfing Weekend (3 days)

This is a fun and exciting weekend of surf instruction and surfing in the Tofino area. We leave VIU on the Friday afternoon and travel up to Ucluelet to our accommodations for the weekend at Surfs Inn. The Saturday morning we head out to do some surfing. Once at our surf beach students are given a pre-trip information session covering the following topics: surf formation and surf dynamics, surfing hazards, personal hazards, and how to surf. After the information session students then spend the rest of the day surfing. We continue surfing on the Sunday morning and early afternoon before returning to VIU.

Canoe Adventure (3 days)

This program is a guided three day canoe adventure within Main Lakes Provincial Park located on Quadra Island. The route includes travelling each day to a new location and potentially some very short portaging between the lakes as we complete our circuit.

LEADERSHIP AND CERTIFICATION

Raft Guides Course (BCROA)

This seven day course is designed for students who are interested in becoming raft guides, or who are just interested in learning about white water rafting. This is an intensive course delivered over 7 days and will include late afternoon sessions and lots of scenario based learning. Participants should have some experience with white water kayaking or rafting prior to the course.

Dates: Apr 29 - May 5

Price: $400/student, $650/non-student

Sea Kayak Level 1 (SKGABC certification)

This course is for people who want to pursue sea kayak guiding/instruction as a potential career, or for the recreational sea kayaker who would like to improve their understanding of sea kayaking. This is an intensive course delivered over 5 days and will include late afternoon sessions. Participants should have some experience paddling sea kayaks prior to the course. The majority of the course will be conducted outdoors, and students should be prepared for variable weather conditions.
