The Mariners opened the tournament against the host RDC Kings. It was a 5 set battle, with the Mariners coming up just short, losing 15-13 in the 5th set. Mariners played a strong, all round match and the level of compete was excellent.
"Red Deer is a great program and this years group is another powerful team". Comments Head VIU Coach Dr Abe Avender.
The VIU Men's next match was against the 2017-18 National Champions and currently 6th Nationally ranked, Limoilou Titan from Quebec City. This match had the Mariners fall 3-1.
"I was very disappointed in our performance in this match as we came out flat and showed a lack of the competitive mindset that is required to compete against a high quality team like the Titan." said Abe.
The Mariners 3rd match in two days had them facing the 3rd nationally ranked, Keyano Huskies. The Mariners put together a great match and won 3-1.
"It was really great to see our guys respond so well after the disappointing match against Limoilou. We came out strong and dictated most of the match with our aggressive serves and outstanding serve receive that allowed our offence to keep the Huskies on their toes all night." comments Abe Avender.
The final match of the weekend for the Mariners was against the #1 Nationally Ranked, 10-0, Fanshaw Falcons. "We put together the best match of the season thus far",
It was really great to see what we looked like playing a full match at our high end. It was a very exciting to see our guys compete with the best in the country and come out on top." said coach Avender.
Another extremely positive aspect to the weekend was the ability to play every athlete considerable minutes against this high level competition and be very competitive with whom ever was on the floor. This is a reflection of the depth and hard work every single player on the team has put in over the past 4+ months.
The tournament was an excellent opportunity for the Mariner Men to see some of the best teams in the country as well as see RDC's new facility, which will host the 2018-19 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championships in March.
