Two-Win Weekend
Mariners take three points from both Capilano and Langara on the road
After earning splits in the first two weekends of PACWEST play, the Mariners picked up a full six points in Week #3 with road victories at Capilano and Langara.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21: VIU 3 - Capilano 0
Lillooet Park, North Vancouver, B.C.
Box Score
After falling 2-1 to Capilano last weekend, the Mariners returned to North Vancouver and enjoyed their biggest goal explosion of the season so far with a 3-0 victory.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the 26th minute thanks to a quick passing play off of a free kick from the left corner. Josh Rayner sent the ball along the ground to Grayson Chalifoux, who one-touched the ball to Brian Bland. With his back to the net, Bland flicked it on through his legs and into the left corner of the net.
While the Blues earned five corner kicks to one for the Mariners, VIU held firm for the rest of the first half.
Half-way through the second half, VIU struck again. Matthew Coburn, from near centre, sent a ball towards the Capilano net that was no-look flicked on by Charlie Smith. Forward Ori Fisher snuck in behind the Capilano defence, ran onto the through-ball and made no mistake to beat the Blues 'keeper.
Josh Rayner scored on a penalty kick in added time to round out the scoring for VIU.
Goalkeeper Cody Carter earned the shutout and the win for the Mariners.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22: VIU 1 - Langara 0
Willoughby Park, Langley, B.C.
A late Charlie Smith goal sent the Mariners back to the Island with three more points after a 1-0 rain-soaked win over Langara.
Smith ran onto a through-ball down the right wing and went shoulder-to-shoulder with a Falcons defender towards the Langara net. He fired a right-footed shot past the onrushing Falcons 'keeper for the only goal of the match.
Cody Carter earned a shutout and a win for the second straight game in the VIU net.
