LANGLEY, BC - The Mariners looked to build on their comeback tie against Capilano, but the conference-leading Langara Falcons used two goals from David Rodriguez Zegarra to defeat VIU.
The game started out on a very promising note for the visitors. Striker James Upshaw (Kamloops, BC) scored his first conference goal in the sixth minute, a header on a cross from Adam Hopper.
The lead would last for six minutes. Rodriguez Zegarra accepted a pass and broke through the middle of the VIU defence, launching a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to bottom left corner of the net to tie the game.
In the 49th-minute, the Falcons took the lead for good. After a Falcons attacker was clipped just inside the 18-yard box, Rodriguez Zegarra stepped up and sent a high hard shot past a diving Marko Ilich in the VIU net.
Ilich made seven saves in the half as the Falcons kept the pressure on VIU throughout the second half and to the final whistle.
