NANAIMO - The Mariners were gunning to build upon their first win of the season, but the visitors from Capilano took all three points in a 2-1 VIU loss.
This loss marked the fourth loss in six games for the Mariners--all losses by only one goal.
Aydin Ali was the story for Capilano as the first-year player scored both Blues goals: a one-time shot after a corner kick in the 22nd minute and a low shot that deflected in off a Mariners defender in the 48th.
VIU striker Brian Bland scored for the Mariners in the 35th minute: an excellent run on to a long through ball from Maxwell Dadzie. Bland headed the ball forward, outran the Capilano defender, and deflected the ball forward in a near-collision with the Capilano goalkeeper. From his stomach, Bland watched the ball bounce into the net before celebrating with his teammates.
The Mariners outshot the Blues 10-5 (5-2 on target) but couldn't get enough momentum for an equalizer in a game that got increasingly chippy and featured seven yellow cards.
