Mariners go 1-1 over two tough games at Langara College
VANCOUVER - Offense was tough to come by but the Mariners dug deep in the backhalf of a weekend double-header at Langara to salvage a split against the Falcons.
JANUARY 23: Langara 66 VIU 49
Langara came out flying and outscored the Mariners 20-9 in the first quarter. VIU got back to within 1 point at the half but Langara outscored the Mariners 39-25 in the second half to earn the win.
VIU's shooting was particularly poor from behind the arc (2-17, 11.8%) and at the free-throw line (7-23, 30.4%). Kaia Simpson scored 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds to lead VIU.
Three Falcons scored in double-figures, led by Reegan Bond's 13 points and 9 rebounds.
JANUARY 24: VIU 49 Langara 46
The Mariners got back into the win column with a 49-46 win. The game finished off with a low-scoring fourth quarter where the Mariners outscored the Falcons 7-5 and no baskets were scored over the final three minutes.
Kiayra Hohlweg had an outstanding game. She shot 6 for 10 from the field and earned a double-double on the back of game-highs in points (13) and rebounds (11). Five of her rebounds were grabbed in the fourth quarter.
Trista Thorn also shot well. She earned 11 points on 5-11 shooting as Thorn and Hohlweg accounted for nearly half of the VIU offense.
Nadia Singh led the Langara effort with 11 points and 7 rebounds.

The Mariners head to Capilano University for a critical set of games with the Capilano Blues on January 30 and 31. The teams are tied for second place in the conference standings with 26 points each from matching 13-3 records.
