Fifth-year Mariners Cox, Simpson, and Labrador earn a win in their final home game
NANAIMO - Home wins are great, but they are even sweeter when they mark the final home game of your varsity career.
Fifth-year student-athletes Mackenzie Cox, Kaia Simpson, and Rachel Labrador finished their time at the VIU Gym on a winning note as the Mariners took down the Douglas Royals 71-59.
In a similar manner to the previous game between these two teams, the defences were intense and on point, leading to a low-scoring first quarter. However, the Mariners took over in the second quarter, led by 8 points from Trista Thorn. The Royals fought back in the third frame but VIU held their opponents to 8 points in the fourth and ensured their 21st win of the season.
Thorn's 25 points were a game-high and her 7 rebounds were only one shy of Sarah Cook's team-high of 8 boards.
As for the seniors, Mackenzie Cox scored 10 points along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and two steals; Kaia Simpson earned 8 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists, and a block; and Rachel Labrador collected 2 points, a rebound, and an assist.
Douglas was led by Mackenzie Dalphond and her double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds).
Congratulations, Grads
