CCAA Women's Soccer Bronze Semifinal Preview: VIU vs St. Clair

RED DEER, AB - Two teams that had visions of CCAA gold medals will refocus on the path towards bronze as the Mariners take on the St. Clair College Saints (Windsor, ON) in a national bronze semifinal where the temperature is forecast to be -3 at kickoff.

How We Got Here

After defeating Red Deer Polytechnic 1-0 in the quarterfinal round, the Mariners dropped their semifinal to the Aigles du Collège Ahuntsic by the same 1-0 score. The lone goal was scored in the 86th minute, giving the Mariners a short turnaround time to put that disappointment behind them in preparation for the bronze semifinal.

The Saints, OCAA champions, were the only team to be upset in the quarterfinal round of the tournament as they dropped a 1-0 decision to the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics. They responded well the next day by defeating the Alberta-champion CUE Thunder 4-0.

St. Clair: Forward Victoria Walsh, an All-Canadian and OCAA Women's Soccer West Division Player of the Year, scored twice in the game against CUE. 

VIU: Defender Mary Nicholls put in incredible work against the Ahuntsic attack in the CCAA semifinal and was named VIU's player of the game.

The Path Ahead

The winner of this game advances to the CCAA bronze medal match on Saturday, November 8  at 12 pm Mountain / 11 am Pacific. They will face the winner of the other bronze semifinal between Red Deer and MSVU. For the loser, their tournament is over.
