Mariners defeat the Chargers to win the PACWEST Championship in a raucous home gym
NANAIMO - Home cooking just tastes a little better.
In front of a loud capacity crowd at the VIU Gym, split between VIU supporters and Camosun supporters, the Mariners captured a second consecutive PACWEST title with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18) victory over the Camosun Chargers. This victory marked the sixth conference championship for Mariners women's volleyball in the past ten seasons.
A day after sweeping the CBC Bearcats (25-18, 25-16, 25-13) in the conference semifinal, the Mariners started slowly and dropped the first set to a Chargers team that was firing offensively on all cylinders. The Mariners turned things around in the second with setter Keira Crellin distributing the ball to a wide variety of VIU attackers. Regan Ingram--who made a massive impact off the bench and helped to spark VIU's turnaround--was named VIU's Player of the Game.
After the game, Aimee Skinner--VIU's player of the game in the semifinal win over CBC--added to her PACWEST award haul by being named tournament MVP. Middle blocker Megan Duffy and libero Jordy Exner were named tournament all-stars.
The Mariners also qualified for the 2025 CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship, March 5-8 at Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario.
