Mariners come back from a 3-0 loss to hand the Blues their first loss of the year
NANAIMO - The Capilano Blues looked all the part of their #1 national ranking against the Mariners on Friday, but VIU dug deep and responded with a 3-2 victory in the rematch to end Capilano's season-long undefeated streak.

The Blues came out firing. The Mariners pushed back. But the North Vancouver squad had all of the answers late in each set to come away with a 3-0 win.
Lauren Hoard ended up as VIU's main offensive option and led the Mariners with 13 kills. Grace Brisebois brought excellent effort against her former team and finished with 11 kills, a block, and an ace.
Regan Ingram and Grace Greene each earned three blocks.
JANUARY 20: VIU 3 Capilano 2 (25-21, 24-26, 25-15, 21-25, 15-10)
The pre-game preparations seemed to work for the Mariners as they came out with renewed confidence and stayed strong in the fifth set, leading to a 3-2 victory and handing Capilano (13-1) their first loss of the season.
Hoard and Brisebois were excellent again, counting 16 and 17 kills. Ingram also broke double-digits with 12 kills. Middle Alannah Wright, who earned 9 kills and 6 of VIU's 16 blocks, was named VIU's Country Club Dairy Queen player of the game.
On Monday, Hoard was named VIU women's volleyball athlete of the week.
