LANGLEY, BC - The Mariners have showed well in every game this season including this matchup with the league-leading Langara Falcons. However, after a flurry of first half goals, the Mariners couldn't find an equalizer in the second half and fell 3-2.
After the Falcons scored two goals seven minutes apart midway through the first half, it looked like the orange-clad hosts might win this one running away. The Mariners roared back only three minutes later as Benedek Horvath controlled the ball in the box and, while chased by three defenders, shot the ball back against the grain to fool the Langara 'keeper and get VIU on the board.
The Falcons restored their two-goal lead in the 42nd minute but the Mariners struck back right before the halftime whistle. Striker Charlie Smith ran onto a rebound off of the crossbar, settled the ball, and struck it into the top right corner of the net while under pressure.
VIU went down a man 20 minutes into the second half as defender Joseph Hare-Goss was shown a red card after defending a Langara break. The Mariners kept pushing but couldn't solve the Langara defence.
Goalkeeper Marko Ilich was busy in the VIU net and made some key saves to help keep the Mariners in the match.
