Running Roughshod over Royals
Mariners open the season with a convincing win over Douglas College
September 6, 2025
NANAIMO - The VIU Mariners looked ready to defend their PACWEST title in a season-opening 4-0 win over the Douglas Royals.
While there was some wildfire smoke and haze in the air keeping the temperatures warm and muggy, the Mariners seemed unfazed as they started quickly and didn't slow down. Defender Avery Henderson (Nanaimo, BC) opened the scoring in the tenth minute as she ran onto a rebound after a corner kick and shot a rocket into the Royals net.
Douglas looked to get some momentum 20 minutes later as goalkeeper Vanessa Chung made an excellent diving save on an Erin Jensen (Nanaimo, BC) penalty kick. Moments later, VIU grabbed momentum back as transfer Jada Kamerman (Nanaimo, BC) read the wind perfectly to score an Olimpico directly from a corner kick.

The Mariners added to their 2-0 lead shortly after halftime. Jade Dillabough (Calgary, AB) went racing down the left wing and she deked her way close to the net before putting a shot through the Chung's legs.
Midfielder Emma Thornton (Nanaimo, BC) finished the scoring by running onto a beautiful through ball and deked past Chung in full flight. Thornton tapped the ball into an empty net to complete the scoring.
Kaiden Thorpe earned the win and a shutout.
