LANGLEY, BC - The first half was a worthy battle between two undefeated teams, but the Mariners exploded for three goals in the second half to defeat the host Falcons 3-0 and take the top spot in the PACWEST conference.
Under the first sustained rains of the semester, the two teams played it tight in the first half. In the second, the Mariners were given a solid free kick opportunity after Emma Riccardi was taken down trying to break through the Langara defence. Mary Nicholls stepped up to take the kick and sent an incredible long high shot between the crossbar and the leaping Falcons goalkeeper--her second goal from distance this season.
Three minutes later, VIU struck again. After Jada Kamerman caused chaos for the Langara defence and won a corner kick, Avery Henderson got behind a deflected ball and sent it into the bottom-left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Jade Dillabough completed the scoring with ten minutes before full time with a shot that gave the Langara goalkeeper trouble shortly after she collided with one of her teammates.
VIU goalkeeper Kaiden Thorpe earned the win with her second shutout in as many starts.
