NANAIMO - The Mariners earned their first three-point game of the season in their first game at Harewood Centennial Park thanks to a 2-1 victory over the Capilano Blues.
After earning a comeback tie versus the Blues in the previous weekend of play, VIU started quickly against Capilano. Striker Charlie Smith outjumped the Capilano keeper to get his head on a delivery from Adam Tsang and VIU took the lead in the 14th minute.
The Blues tied things up in the 69th minute as Sebastian Cirotto, last year's leading goal scorer in the conference, got onto a rebound and got the Blues on the board.
However, the Mariners regained the lead for good ten minutes later. The Capilano goalkeeper tripped up Mariners midfielder Josh Rayner in the 18-yard box and the referee immediately signalled for a penalty kick. Charlie Smith stepped up, and just as he did versus Douglas in the first week of the season, made good on his opportunity from the spot.
