NANAIMO - The top-ranked Langara Falcons held the Mariners in check and dealt the Mariners a 2-0 defeat at Q'unq'inuqwstuxw Stadium.
The Mariners outshot the Falcons 15-10 but were only credited with one shot on target. The Falcons turned the game in their favour with a first half goal and added a late goal in extra time while VIU was pressing to seal the win.
Despite the loss, a 4-4 tie between Capilano and Douglas on the same day means VIU trails Capilano by only three points heading into the final weekend of the regular season. Capilano and VIU play in Squamish, BC on Saturday, October 18. A Capilano win clinches a playoff spot for the Blues, while a tie or VIU win means that the final playoff spot will likely be decided the next day--the final day of the regular season.
Thank You, Grads
Before the game, the team's graduating seniors were recognized (L-R): Nathan Torres, Thomas Greze-Kozuki, and Marko Ilich.
Up Next
VIU needs results in the final weekend of the regular season to catch and pass Capilano in the standings and grab a playoff spot. The first test happens on Saturday, October 18 at Capilano's Squamish campus. A VIU win or tie sets up a final day of intrigue on Sunday, October 19 as VIU plays Douglas and Capilano plays Langara.
